Penfolds BIN 28 Kalimna Shiraz 2006 from a vineyard penfolds purchased in 1945.
Because we have some bottles left I wanted to try one to get some information on its condition.
We opened the bottle and although there wasnt any fault, the wine was completely closed. After decanting and letting it breath for one hour, the wine has developed very good and starts to open.
In the glass the BIN 28 shows a bold red color with hints of orange and brown on the rim.
The beautiful slow tears and the heat in the nose refer to the 14,50% alcohol.
On the nose it shows red fruit – strawberry – and dark fruit – blackberry and blueberry. It also shows smoky notes of vanilla and tobacco from the oak barrel, hints of balsamic and herbs.
On the palate the syrah grape shows its beauty: dominant red and dark fruit, spicy notes, smokey tones and some olive combine to a great full-bodied redwine.
The finish is medium to long and shows a last explosion of the red fruit bucket with spicy tones in the aftertaste.
The wine has medium + taninns, medium acidity, is full bodied, finishs dry and is balanced out well.
I think the wine will become more complex with some more years of age.
